I and T Expands

I and T Transfer, a long time moving and storage company in Shelby is adding on to their building. The addition will give I and T another inside location for trucks to load and unload. Before trucks only had one bay and outside loading docks where the weather has been a problem. I and T stands for Irvin and Taylor, the two families who started the company. They are located at the far west end of Shelby just past Pamida.

Hospital Grass Fire

At 1:30 PM today firefighters responded to a small grass fire directly behind Marias Medical Center. The fire was burning in tall dry grass across from the employee parking lot in a vacant field. There was no wind so the fire did not spread.

New BNSF Crew Bridges

Recently, BNSF railway has installed two small custom bridges in Shelby. The little walk bridges are designed to allow train crews to access the rail yard without having to get down into a drainage ditch. That ditch drains rain water from Shelby and is often flooded. The slopes of the ditch are also grassy and slick. BNSF prides itself on safety and so this is just one more thing to help keep their crews healthy.
The Shelby rail yard is a busy crew change area 24/7 and a large holding area for many trains.

"Memphis" Jim Evans

Today NBMC had the pleasure of meeting "Memphis" Jim Evans. Jim is from Memphis, Tennessee and is traveling with his dog around the USA. When I asked Jim what his dog has for a name, I was amused to hear her name is "god", which of course is dog spelled backward. What called our attention to them in the first place was all the markings on Jim's motor-home. There is hardly a square inch that is not covered with a type of graffiti. From what I could gather, Jim allows folks to write what they want on the sides. Jim and god headed west soon after for Glacier Park, Kalispell and points beyond. I took a full length photo of the motor-home but my aging camera with a scratched lens failed me. You can still see some of the graffiti in the photo below.

Construction Trailer Wreck

Just after 3:00 PM today a trailer hitch failed on US 2. The accident happened in front of the Glacier Motel of Shelby. When the trailer came loose, it hit a light pole shattering it and moving the pole about a foot. The lamp at the top of the pole was also destroyed by the impact. The trailer then veered left and crashed into the pickup that had been pulling it. Quite a bit of damage was then done to the pickup by denting the rear panel. The trailer itself had some denting and the fenders pulled loose. The pickup and trailer are owned by E F Construction of Shelby. No one was injured in this accident and the roadway was cleared soon. Marias River Electric then arrived to replace the light pole.

Painting The Town

Gary Momberg and his helper were busy today painting the Curlyco building on main street. The building, formerly the Capital Cafe, had recently been vandalized by someone "tagging" the upper part with spray paint. When the Capital Cafe closed it was the longest continuously operated restaurant in Montana. The cafe was open for at least 65 years at the time of its closing. The present rock and art deco face of the building was installed when a natural gas leak in the kitchen blew the former front out into the middle of Main Street. That accident happened at night when the cafe was not open so no one was injured.

Gary Momberg said that he has been a painter most of his life. His company, Perfection Painting, painted at one of the K-12 buildings, formerly Shelby High, when that building recently went through extensive remodeling. Gary can be reached at 406-949-1795 for your painting needs.

Old Lines New Lines

Workers have been busy completing this years new water lines for Shelby. They have installed the new lines on both sides of town and are presently working the south side. Some of the old lines have served Shelby for nearly 100 years and are in real need of replacement. There have been many breaks in those old line that cost the city extra in repairs. In the below photo, work continues next to the Sherlock Motel.

Farm Fire

Today at about 11:00 AM firefighters were called to a fire south west of Shelby. The fire, at the old Anderson farm home, seems to have started in tall grass near some granaries then spread to a couple large round hay bales. Firefighters had some work to do getting the fire out in the hay bales as grass compacted is hard to extinguish. The fire burned around some old farm equipment but seemed to do little damage. Structures in the area, including the farm house, were not effected. The cause of the fire is not known to NBMC.
