Subway For Shelby?

Subway, no... not the sandwich shop, we have one of those. We're talking subway, you know... underground and such. Looking around on the net for things about Shelby as we do from time to time a curious site popped up. It is called subwaynut.com and strangely had a page for Shelby. Looking closer, we could see a connection since the subway nut guy also is nutty for above ground trains including Amtrak. Below, is a link to the Shelby Depot with photos of the above ground Amtrak Empire Builder.

Respect Your Elders

Respect your elders. Good policy which this time applies to two historic buildings in Shelby. The first being located just north of Main Street on Sixth Ave and the second being at the corner of Dawson Street and Chouteu Ave. For some years now the apartment building off Main Street has been known as the Double J. It just this week has been renamed and repainted as The Chateau. The second apartment building on Dawson Street called the Dye Apartments has had much work done inside and fresh landscaping. Long before becoming the Dye Apartments, that building started out as a railroad restaurant two blocks away and next to the train depot. When the restaurant closed the building was moved and some additions were made including the second floor. This building can be seen next to the depot as early as 1923 in photos.

Lamps Sprout Flora

Volunteers are busy filling baskets full of bedding plants and hanging them from the city lamp posts this week. The plants and baskets were purchased with donations. The plantings were obtained through Shelby Floral and Gift. The donations were raised at the annual "Cinco de Mayo" event held in Shelby. In the photo below, three people fill and hang the baskets while one operates the backhoe.
