Runaway Semi-truck Totals Out Vehicles

A runaway truck caused a fair amount of damage Wednesday, Oct. 18 as it rolled away from the fuel pumps at Town Pump Pilot Center on the West side of Shelby. The driver had left the Semi-truck unattended as many drivers do at that location and the truck rolled down the slight incline hitting and shoving several automobiles out of its way. It continued, crossing the street between Town Pump and the Dixie Inn restaurant. Once the truck was in the Dixie parking lot it narrowly missed the corner of the restaurant smashing into a late model pickup truck and the trailer it was towing. That pickup was pushed several feet before the Semi ceased moving. This is the second time a Semi-truck has rolled away at this location in recent times and caused damage. The other Semi accident involved hitting two cars parked in front of the Subway sandwich shop at Town Pump and then crashing into the building. See our archives for that story including photo.

Gov. Schweitzer's Staff To Visit

Revised story:
Earlier, we published that Gov. Brian Schweitzer himself would be in town and we must apologize because we too were misinformed. We first noticed that announcement in the local Shelby newspaper and started to check it out for you. We followed up by visiting www.mt.gov, the official Montana website, to check the Governor's itinerary. Seeing no mention of his visit to Shelby, we then called the local Shelby newspaper. A well known staff member there "confirmed" that "yes, Gov. Schweitzer was to be in Shelby on Oct. 24 at Noon." We believed her, hung up and published the "confirmed"information. So, again, we apologize and print this retraction.

Gov. Schweitzer is to visit Shelby again, this time promoting various under used energy sources. These sources include, wind, ethanol and bio-diesel. The Montana Chamber of Commerce is hosting a 25 minute presentation on Oct. 24, 12:00 Noon downstairs at The Griddle restaurant. The Griddle is located at 215 Main St. downtown Shelby.

3rd St. South Fire

6:30 AM
There was a grass fire in the 700 block of 3rd St. South. The fire was on the hillside at that location near Mountain View Cemetery. Firefighters had the fire out in about fifteen minutes time just as the flames came within a few feet of a house on that hill. The area that burned had tall dry grass over one foot tall.

HSH Gets New Sprinkler System

Dew Drop Irrigation of Shelby has been busy bringing a whole new sprinkler system to HSH located at 133 6 th Ave South. HSH or Historic Shelby High is better known by its past names. The building was built in 1931 as Shelby High School. It remained Shelby High until 1962 when the new Shelby High School was completed on the North side of town. It then became Shelby Junior High and in the 1980s it became known as Shelby Middle School. In 2003 the building ceased being used by the Shelby school system when a new elementary school was built. Shelby city government then took over ownership of the 30,172 sq. foot building with the intent of making it into a community center, adult education facility, and the heart of a future community college. In the below photo, Dew Drop Irrigation uses a "pipe puller", a small machine that pulls plastic pipe underground, to install the new sprinkler system. The photo shows how the pipe is fed into the ground. This new and first time system will water the turf on three sides of the HSH building.

Locomotive Fire

Shortly before 3:30 PM on Friday Oct. 6th, someone spotted large flames and a lot of black smoke coming from the top of a locomotive passing through Shelby. Heading West with another locomotive in front, one behind and a full train of rail cars in tow, this Canadian National engine soon became the focus of the town's attention. When the engineer realized what was happening to his train, he stopped it just short of the I-15 overpass where he was soon meet by fire, sheriff and ambulance personnel. The quick thinking engineer shut down the three engines so that it would be safe for the emergency personnel to spray the burning locomotive with water and foam, then got off the train. The flames on the South side of the engine were put out fast but then a firefighter radioed that there was still fire coming out of the North side. More hose was rolled out so firefighters could climb on top of the engine where they continued extinguishing the fire. The fire was out in about fifteen minutes total.
