New Dash Inn Drive-Thru

NBMC Shelby
Customers were busily lining up at the Dash Inn's new drive-thru window on Friday for their Winter menu. The Winter menu consists mostly of deli sandwiches, salads and soft drinks. The Dash Inn, once a Tasty Freeze location, normally only operates in the late Spring and Summer months and has food service by carhop. We at NBMC only know of two other times that it has had Winter hours, once briefly in its Tasty Freeze days and again briefly by its first owner as the Dash Inn.

Shelby's Railroad Quiet Zone

Recently, many Shelby residents have expressed an interest in making the main railroad crossing into a quiet zone. A quiet zone means that passing trains no longer routinely sound their horns at that crossing. In order to comply with current regulations and maintain safety there are few ways to create a quiet zone. Most systems are very expensive and some quite intrusive. One much less expensive and intrusive way is with an Automated Horn System. This system basically consists of two horns that emulate the sound of a train horn, the steel poles for mounting, the quiet zone indicators for the engineers and the control box which is also mounted on one of the poles.

Below is what Railroad Controls Limited. has to say about the horn system at their web site.
"The AHS™ is mounted at the crossing, rather than on the locomotive, to deliver a longer, louder, more consistent audible warning to motorists and pedestrians while eliminating noise pollution in neighborhoods for more than 1/2 mile along the rail corridor."

"AHS™ sounds like a train horn because the tone modules in the AHS™ horns were digitally recorded from an actual locomotive horn. After receiving the signal from the railroad's track circuit warning system, AHS™ mimics the train horn warning by cycling through the standard railroad whistle pattern until the train reaches the crossing."

"Once the train has entered the crossing AHS™ stops sounding its horn. A confirmation signal notifies the locomotive engineer that the AHS™ is functioning properly."

"When the locomotive engineer sees that the confirmation signal is flashing, he will not be required to sound his horn unless he detects an unsafe condition at the grade crossing."

"Coordination with the railroad operating company is essential since the AHS™ is directly connected to the railroad's crossing signal-warning system. The railroad operating company must issue instructions to their train crews regarding the sounding or non-sounding of the train's horn."

Early Tuesday morning, Shelby Mayor, Larry Bonderud and some city council members were at the crossing to see a demonstration conducted by Robert Albritton of RCL. The horn shown below was temporarily mounted on a large tractor so sound readings could be taken for those present. When interviewed by NBMC, Mr. Albritton said that a train horn effects thirty acres with its noise pollution compared to less than one acre effected by the Automated Horn System. Robert Albritton is National Sales Manager for RCL and can be reached at: 817-307-8885. Shelby's Unknown Treasure

Shelby has an unknown treasure, it is called the "Steen House". The Steen House was built around a much older cabin by the now famous artist, Lee Steen. Although Lee Steen (1897-1975) was born in Kentucky and lived last at Roundup, Montana he also had a very strong connection to Shelby, Montana. Lee lived and worked here for some years and had a daughter that was born here, reportedly in the Steen House. Read more at the link below to see how you can help save the Steen House which is in danger. We at NBMC have been working to save this treasure with the intent of turning it into a museum and interpretive center. Tourists now flock to see Lee Steen's art in Great Falls, Montana and they would come to Shelby as well.

Deer vs. Car Results In Rollover

An accident that could have easily taken the life of a SUV driver took place early Tuesday morning. The accident took place south of Shelby on I-15 and just over the crest of the Marias River hill in the south bound lanes. The male driver lost control after hitting the animal. The mid-sized SUV he was driving skidded nearly 200 feet then rolled over several times down the hill. Luckily and thoughtfully the driver had his seat belt on and rode out the wreck inside the vehicle. Amazingly, in-spite of all this, plus a severely crushed driver side roof, two eyewitnesses at the scene reported to NBMC that the driver climbed out and was walking and talking. First to arrive was a Toole County deputy and he reported that the driver looked to be in quite good shape and was sitting and talking to him. Both south bound lanes remained closed for nearly two hours and traffic was re-directed onto the Frontage Road.

On The Road Training Camp

Today NBMC had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing Lynn Chase at the ball park of the old Meadowlark School. Lynn is traveling with her two dogs from Seattle, Washington, where she makes her home, to the Australian Shepherd National Championship dog competition at West Bend, Wisconsin. Lynn also travels in her SUV with all that's needed for an on the road training camp for her dogs. When we met Lynn, her and the dogs were using the traveling training camp material to it's fullest. The first and most experienced dog, a six year old named Sufi, put on a great show for us and all those passing by. He practiced running in line, sitting and jumping hurdles with just quick voice and hand/arm commands. Next, it was time for two year old Bran to show his stuff. His routine was like that of Sufi's but Bran will train at least two more years before being able to do all that Sufi can. Both dogs are Australian Shepherds and are trained to compete by Lynn and her husband. They have been involved in this type of training for five years. The organization for the dog competition is through the Australian Shepherd Club of America.

Pedestrian vs. Car Accident, On Main St.

Shelby, Montana
3:00 PM
Ambulance and two Sheriff's Dept. patrol cars were dispatched to Main St today where there was the scene of and accident between a pedestrian and a car. NBMC was told by a gentleman at the site that a man with a walker was crossing the street when the car struck him. The driver of a late model Cadillac was making a right turn onto Main at the intersection next to Well Drug Store. See second photo below for the car.
The driver was taken to the Sheriff's office for questioning and the pedestrian was taken to Marias Medical Center for treatment.
Update:
The pedestrian crossing the street was 79 year old, Lyle Keller of Shelby and the driver of the car was 55 year old, Vivian McDermott also of Shelby. The only know citation that McDermott received was for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

End Of The Line For Pizza Depot Building

A building that was once a full service gas station and later became Howard's Pizza of Shelby and finally the Pizza Depot is now meeting its end. Seized by the IRS in 2005, the building's contents were auctioned off and the building went to the Montana Dept. Of Transportation in Helena. Now the State of Montana is razing the building to make way for the upcoming changes to what locals call "The Viaduct", a bridge that crosses the BNSF Railway tracks. That bridge was constructed in the 1930s and has been a site of many fender bender accidents. Citing the advancing age of the bridge, its condition and the accident record officials and the public both have wanted to change and or replace it. Clearing away the Pizza Depot building will make room to widen the roadway and make safety changes where Coyote Pass and Oilfield Ave. meet. Click here for the first story we did about Pizza Depot being seized by the IRS from Patti Warburton of Warburton Corp. and its later sale by them.

Another New Building Downtown

Shelby residents have been happy to see the new buildings going up downtown giving the town a fresh and cleaner look. In the photo below you can see the concrete walls of the new H and O Motor Co. building being built. Wall forms for the concrete are Styrofoam and the concrete is poured down through the middle to make a very solid wall. The Styrofoam then becomes a permanent part of the wall adding insulation value. The concrete pumper truck is from Bozeman, Mt and can do a four or even five story building. H and O is a long time fixture in Shelby selling auto parts and repair equipment. We look forward to covering their Grand Opening soon.
