New Downtown Building

Work on the new Shelby Glass and Shelby Office Supply building is progressing. Today, Larson Construction of Shelby was busy preparing the building for its roof. The back of the building has been dominant on Main St. for many years and was built by Leroy & Claire Abell to enhance their electronics repair business called, The Radio TV Clinic. That cement block building sat unused for some time after the passing of Leroy and was then purchased from Claire by Pat & Jeanne McDonough. The McDonough's used the block building as overflow space for their glass business with the idea to include the office supply in front and move from the present Front St. location.

Falling Trees

Today's brief but very strong wind kept firefighters and residents busy cleaning up fallen trees and their limbs. All over town there were limbs, large and small covering streets and yards but at least six locations also had very large limbs and even huge portions of complete trees broken down. In two of the below photos you can see a split in two Cottonwood tree laying in the street and another crushing a large cable line that it fell across. The split tree was on the north side of town near the old Dave's Grocery building and the one sitting on the cable line was at the top of Sixth Ave. So. The photo with the firemen cutting limbs was also behind Dave's Grocery. County Attorney, Merle Raph's vintage Chevy car just missed being crushed by a large limb at that residence. Duke Gardipee had a huge limb blocking his driveway.

The 2006 Fireman's Picnic

Picnic goers where once again everywhere at the annual Fireman's Picnic held each year at the firehall in Shelby. A long line formed at about 11:45 AM and continued until after 1:00 PM. The usual Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, baked beans, cake and ice cream were dished up on a donation basis. This event, popular with seniors, also brings out a wide range of ages as well as city and rural people.
